The Bauchi State House of Assembly on Thursday summoned the state Head of Service (HOS) and the Accountant General (AG) to appear before it on Wednesday  July 4, 2018.

The resolution for the summoning of the two public officers followed a motion to that effect moved on the floor of House by Hon. Maryam Bagel, representing Dass Constituency yesterday.

Bagel expressed concern over deduction of workers’ salaries last month, querying,
“Why should a sitting Head of Service with his experience in the civil service come out to declare that the deductions made from the salaries are of illegal allowances”.

“The Head of Service is telling us that all the years he served as one, he has been approving such illegal allowances knowingly.

Hon. Maryam Bagel further queried, “Is he saying there is any allowances our workers have been receiving that has neither executive approval nor structural approval”

She also expressed concern over the transfer of workers payment of salaries from the office of the Accountant General to the Office of the Head of Service of the state.

Bagel therefore called on the House to invite the Head of Service to explain reasons for the sudden salary deductions from the wages of civil servants.

She also urged the lawmakers to invite the Accountant General of the state to explain his role in transferring the function of his office to that of the office of head of service.

The lawmaker further called on the house to mandate executive to make available to the house the report of all verification exercises conducted in the state as well as the report of the state transition committee.

Bagel further called for the formation of a special committee that will study the report and get back to the house for further action.

Seconding the motion for the summoning of the two officers, Mr. Mohammed Aminu Tukur representing Lere/Bula constituency, described the motion as timely, stressing that the motion will restore sanity in the civil service of the state,”

The legislators, after intensive deliberation on the motion, unanimously resolved that the Head of Service and the Accountant General of the state should appear before the house on the Wednesday, July 4, 2018 to state their roles in the unfortunate incident.

They also resolved to form a committee that will study the report of the sittings and report back to the house for scrutiny.
