The Head of Physical and Health Education Department Federal College of Education (FCE), Zaria, Dr. Ahmed Tijjani Yusuf has identified economic problem as the major obstacle towards sports development in Nigeria as it affect the smooth growth of sporting activities from the grassroot level.
He stated this at the 2nd Annual National Conference organized by the PHE department with the theme “Repositioning physical Health Education and sports development” held at the college lecture theater.
Dr. Yusuf noted that, major corporate organisations and government agencies have sporting clubs but now with the economic dwindling they fold their hands, and most disturbing is the way and manner government is not helping matters.
“Sports development will not be over emphasized as government, corporate organization and individuals should invest in sporting activities; so that the life of Nigerians will improve physically and financially”.
Dr. Yusuf who is a sport administrator frown at athletes, who dumped their states for another because of the high incentives and advised NSC to revisit the laws that deals with such cases for sport development in Nigeria.
In her remarks, the Chairman L.O.C Prof. Adeyanju said there is no gain saying that physical education form a solid foundation for children and individual, but now the physical Health Education has been relegated to the background.
Adeyanjun said most of the primary and secondary schools don’t have field for physical training unlike before,  and it is a subject which is compulsory for every students at primary and post primary schools.
According to her, to get a healthy nation, there is the need to return Physical and Health Education (PHE) subjects to schools curriculum and be made compulsory for every student, and failure to do so will result in failed nation health wise.
She advised government to restart sport development from the grassroot level before looking at sports at the apex if really we want to excel as other nations do.
Also in his contribution, Dr. Zamani described the situation in sports in Nigeria as unfortunate because, only in sports that an Engineer can lead sports ministry or even other professionals, but leaving the actual PHE professionals aside.
