A Chief Magistrate’ Court sitting at Chediya, G.R.A. Zaria has adjourned a criminal conspiracy case between Commissioner of Police and a staff of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and a student.
It could be recalled that Joy Enobong-Akpan (ABU staff), and her daughter, Akon Iyene (student) have been arraigned before the court on June 2 for criminal conspiracy and offering false information.
The two were said to have connived and falsely accused six staff of the university of kidnapping the second accused, Iyene, a student of Human Anatomy Department of the institution.
Adjourning the case, the Chief Magistrate, Musa Auwal said the case was adjourned to give time for the defense lawyer to produce the second accused person for the case to be mentioned.
Counsel to the accused, Aminu Adamu told the court that the second accused person, Akon Iyene “is a student who is now writing a test, which prevented her from appearing in court.”
The counsel, however, promised to produce the second accused person on the adjourned date.
He applied for the bench warrant to be vacated since he promised to bring her to the court on June 20.
Adamu prayed the court to stop Journalists from covering and publishing the court proceedings, describing it as one-sided and it would temper with the judgement yet to be delivered by the court.
The Chief Magistrate granted the application and vacated the bench warrant and warned him not to fail the court as it would not accept any excuse.
On media coverage, Auwal disagreed with the lawyer’s submission and reminded him of the existence of Freedom of Information Bill.
He advised the media to be fair and just while reporting court proceedings.
