Akwa Ibom sets up scheme to create 10,000 jobs

The Akwa Ibom State government has set up a pilot scheme for employment generation aimed at creating 10,000 job opportunities in the first phase by first quarter of 2016.
Senior Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Technical Matters and Due Process, Engr. Ufot Ebong who disclosed this to newsmen on  in Uyo, said the program is called “Akwa Ibom Enterprise and employment Scheme (AKEES).”
Engr. Ebong said that the number would be scaled up in subsequent phases to ensure that the current unemployment rate in the state is reduced by 50 percent in the next four to five years.
According to him, “AKEES is designed for the implementation of the state government new Enterprise Development Program. It is aimed at generating more sustainable employment opportunities for unemployed youths through empowering local businesses who can employ our youths to earn a wage while undergoing practical enterprise skills development and hands-on training for growing businesses in Akwa Ibom; learning by doing and earning while learning”.
Ultimately he added, “Our vision is to establish Akwa Ibom as an enabling state, where anyone regardless of their economic background can generate an idea, start and grow their business as easily as possible. Our prospective motto is; ‘If you cannot be successful here, you cannot be successful anywhere’ ”.
Among the objectives of the scheme, the Senior Special Assistant stated include; to foster a domestic ecosystem to reduce capital flight through importation and exportation of un-optimized products – produce to consume, import to transform into higher value exports.
Support and grow businesses and products that have high export potential through franchising and online trading platforms; made in Akwa Ibom, sold worldwide.
For accessibility, an online and registration desks at local government council headquarters and via mobile (SMS) have been created to make it easy for anyone to register for the program, while accommodating a large number of registrations.
