Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has adopted proactive measure with the setting up of a 9-member conflicts reconciliation body called “Integration and Harmonization Committee” to resolve vexing issues arising from the just concluded primaries of the party.
The aim of the committee is to ensure not just a victory for the party in the forthcoming general elections but also ensure a common front anchored on peace in line with the vision of the State’s Governor to engender growth and well being of the people before and after the polls.
Speaking with newsmen on Wednesday at the state secretariat of the party, the chairman of the committee and one time deputy governor in the state, Engr. Patrick Ekpotu said the committee was inaugurated two weeks ago by the state governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel on behalf of the party.
Ekpotu stated that the committee terms of reference included; to bring the PDP family together in order by strengthening one another’s faith so as to move with a unified front, standing together, and working as indivisible family in the coming election.
Also to heal wounds, by recognizing and taking steps to persuade and assuage the feelings of disillusioned and hurting party men and women who were negatively impacted by party policies, actions and by perceived conscious leadership shortcomings and bring them back in harmony with the party spirit of accommodation for the common tasks ahead.
According to him, the committee will seek and secure the integration of every segment of Akwa Ibom electorate in the scheme of things irrespective of party extraction or affiliation, by enlisting their support, giving a sense of belonging and advancing the one-state-interest philosophy of the Governor.
It is hoped to continually interface with the Governor who is the party governorship flag bearer and the party for actions on key agreements, understandings and recommendations reached that require urgency in the overall interest of the state and success and integrity of government.
In achieving the objectives, Engr. Ekpotu said “The Committee will adopt a transparent open-door approach in its assignment, by making it easy and convenient for Akwa Ibom people irrespective of educational, social or economic standing to make their representations to the Committee without any encumbrance.
“We shall embark on a sustained quick impact sensitization to inform everyone about the Committee’s tasks and responsibilities. We shall most of all, rely on the very effective communication channels/structure of the Party down to the wards to ensure that everyone comes aboard in the this assignment.
“We shall invite/dialogue with individuals and group known or suspected to be aggrieved; and interact with various party groups from each local government area to unravel the full depth and ramifications of grievances peculiar to each constituency; and then determine the best possible courses of remedial actions”, Engr. Ekpotu stated.
He called for cooperation from journalists in the state to enable the committee succeed while also calling the aggrieved members of the party to be free to express their anger taking the interest and growth of the state at heart.
Among other members of the party include, Senator Emmanual Ibokette who is the Vice Chairman, Senator Helen Essuene and Barr. Godswill Umoh who serves as the Secretary for the Committee.
