The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) Ondo State, has described the move by Governor Olusegun Mimiko to borrow $77.9 million dollars from a foreign organization as not only unnecessary but an act capable of jeopardizing the welfare of the future generation.
In a statement by Idowu Ajanaku, the Director of Media, Publicity and Strategy of ACN, Ondo State, he described the move as embarrassing and in tandem with the character of this government which is bent on running the state into perpetual debt.
It would be recalled that questions have been asked on how the government spent the over 600 billon Naira which accrued to it for almost four years, the 50 billion Naira loan from the capital market inspite of being one of the major oil producing States The government has not provided any explanation.
What we see are decayed infrastructure, deplorable roads, lack of potable water in the cities and rural areas of the State. We are also surprised at the claim by the State Commissioner of finance that the said 77.9 million dollars loan being sought would be spent on youth employment and health programmes. “
This is a government that has no track record to show for any job provision since inception or Is it the type of jobs at Ore farm settlement we are talking about where majority of the youth abandoned at the camp have escaped for their lifes? Is it the Arigidi Tomatoes factory type of jobs which have now become a pure water store or the Auga Akoko cattle farms?” he asked
Specifically Mr. Yele Ogundipe said government plans to spend $50 million dollars on health programmes and $27.9 million on youth employment.  We do not agree that Ondo State should secure such a huge foreign loan to pursue the dream of 30,000 babies per year which the Ondo State Governor has earlier unveiled as the major focus of the Abiye health programme,” he said.
He further said,“We want to join the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who rightly said that the state was not seeking the loans for projects which have direct impact on the lives of the people, to condemn this fresh move to plunge Ondo State into a needless debt. The Internally Generated revenue (IGR) and monies from the monthly Federal allocation is enough to transform the State if they are properly channeled to build infrastructure like roads, water and provide incentives for private investments in the State, he went further.
