An international body of legal practitioners; Lawyers Without Borders otherwise known as Advocat Sans Frontieres headquartered in Tolus, France said it is monitoring the Shi’ite Zaria massacre and would ensure that the case was not swept under the carpet.
The Head of Office, Nigeria of the body, Barrister Angela Uwandu stated this Wednesday in Kaduna while fielding questions from Journalists during a call on the Council leadership at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).
Uwandu said it is unfortunate that such large number of human being could be killed in this 21st century in such circumstance.
She stressed that the body has being providing legal aid to victims of torture pro bono and have recorded quite a number of success with eighty five successful prosecution out of one hundred and fifty cases they are handling.
Uwandu said they have had great support from stakeholders and would need the cooperation of the media to record more success. She said they need the media not only to report the issues of torture and other human right abuses, but be active stakeholders and raise the bar.
She said they have presence in eight states of the federation as they collaborate with the Human Right Commission.
She enjoined the NUJ to partner them in the training which they have embarked on since 2009 with funding from international organisations.
In his remark, Chairman Kaduna State Council of Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Garba Mohammad said media practitioners in Kaduna would be more than willing to make success of the issues raised.
Represented by his Vice, Zhiro James Jatau, Mohammad said Journalists under the Council will be more than willing to partner and grab any opportunity of capacity building through various training.
He applauded the body for their human right defence, especially pro bono for the down trodden.
