6 Retired Bauchi Judges Claim N244m Benefits

Six retired judges from the services of Bauchi State have written to the state government requesting for the payment of their retiring benefits amounting to over N244 million.
 
The request for the payment of the benefits was contained in a letter addressed to the governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar ‎ signed by Barrister Isah Mohammed on behalf of the retired and deceased judges. 
 
“We are engaged as solicitors to the under listed retired Judicial Officers and the estate claimants of Bauchi State Judiciary (Herein referred to as “Our Clients”), on whose instructions‎ and directive we write you”, the letter‎ stated.
 
The letter explained that the demand for ‎payment of the retired and deceased judges’ benefits is in compliance with Section 291 of 1999 Constitution as amended.
 
“It is imperative to note that the judicial officers demand is in tandem with the extant laws as per the ‘Certain Political, Public and Judicial Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc) (Amendment Act No 1 of 2008, which took effect from 1st January, 2007 and the schedule Of Service, applicable to Judicial Officers of State Judiciaries.”
 
It further said that the retired judicial officers have invested their youth and strength in discharging their responsibilities and are now suffering in retirement while others have died.
 
“Your Excellency may wish to be further informed that in compliance with the extant legal requirements for a three (3) months mandatory notice prior to any legal step for the recovery of the said sum of Two Hundred and Forty Four Million Seven Hundred and Forty Eight Thousand ‎Nine Hundred and Ninety Four Naira Sixty Eight Kobo (N244,748,994.68).
 
The six retired and deceased Judicial Officers are; Former Bauchi State Chief Judge, Late Justice Sabo Suleiman Darazo‎, Late Justice Bala Umar, Khadi Hamidu Gambo Bununu, Late Khadi Ibrahim Mohammed Liman, Late Khadi Aminu Halliru Usman and Khadi Mohammed Shuaibu.
