2019: INEC To Disqualify Candidates, Parties For Early Campaign

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed its resolve to disqualify any candidate who breaches the electoral law on campaign or pasting of posters.
This warning was given by the INEC Zamfara State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Asmau Sani Maikudi while briefing journalists at the state headquarters Gusau, on Wednesday.
The Resident Commissioner warned political parties and their candidates  to desist breaching the provision of the electoral act with regards to the commencement of campaigns.
Dr Asmau added that it had come to the commission’s knowledge that political parties and their candidates are pasting posters all over the places which made INEC Zamfara State office to write to the political parties and copied all the security agencies regarding the issue.
She said Section 99 sub section 1 of the electoral act clearly specifies the timeline for campaigns and that INEC will not hesitate to apply the full wrath of the law on any such candidate and the political party that defies the law.
“If we see any new poster, we are going to apply the  full wrath of the law, that is the disqualification of the candidate,” she warned.
The commissioner laments the poor turn out for the ongoing Contiouus Voters Registration (CVR) in the state and therefore called on the people particularly of of the voting age to ensure that they register to enable them to vote during elections.
She said the commission is determined to conduct credible, free and fair election in 2019 and would therefore leave no stone unturned to achieve it mandate.
